Five Simple Steps To Build A Great Team Blog

One of the things I love about building a great Web site is the method behind it. I used to largely rely on my own ability to produce as much content as possible. This puts a lot of stress on yourself, especially if you are working on other projects. That’s one of the reasons I invited Muhammad Saleem and Thord Hedengren, as well as relying heavily on Chris Pearson for production advice and design capabilities.

One of the things I realized early on in management (of any kind) was that you have to surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, and rely on yourself to just get in and do the dirty work. I’ve admired Peter Rojas for a long time for his ability to jump in and work hard and build a great site. My personal mentality is ‘it takes a great team.’ That’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to bring these guys on. Because they bring their own views of what it takes to build a great site.

Here’s my simple list of things to do when assembling a cast of web workers:

  1. Find people who are smarter than you.
  2. Find people heavily engaged in a different conversation.
  3. Find people you can rely upon.
  4. Find people with a different voice.
  5. Find people who complement your skills.
