Why Your Venture Backed Startup Doesn’t Get Links

Robert Scoble a guy I really like is pissed off about not getting links about some boring story about Intel.

Now I’ve watched every Video about this, read every document online and I’m still not excited about this story. The Intel one that is. I’m insanely geeky but I like to keep things simple. But plane fact of the matter is. I like it to work and outside of that I don’t really care as much. I like things to just work and then to ignore them.

The real story is Robert Scoble feels well burned because no one is linking to his video. To his site, and to his scoop. Trust me I’ve been there.

Here’s the problem. I find PodTech so boring on occassion I could fall asleep watching just about every video. They are so so so long. I want shorter interviews that tell me why stuff works. Not a full on interview about the interior decorating features of Intel. Yes, I did watch the video. I enjoy some of the type commentary because I can scan it quickly and take away valuable information.

Here’s a few suggestions.

Amapedia: A Wikipedia dedicated to shopping

While not exactly innovating, Amazon has been taking advantage of more innovative technologies that it gets credit for. After launching its very Web 2.0-ish S3 distributed storage service and its EC2 virtual server service, Amazon has embraced the wiki platform.

Amapedia is a community for sharing information about the products you like the most.

Amapedia introduces an exciting new way of organizing products we call “collaborative structured tagging”. In a nutshell, it makes it easy for you to tag products with what they are and with their most important facts, and for others to search, discover, filter, and compare products by those tags.

Amapedia is the next generation of Amazon.com’s ProductWiki feature; all of your previous ProductWiki contributions were preserved and now live here.

For a list of 15 reasons to stop blogging head on over to Lorelle.

Thanks To Those Who Inspire, Believe, Read, Write, Sponsor…

I realized it’s not often that I get a chance to thank people. I want to thank the readers first off for making this publication get off to such a great start. I want to thank people who inspire me and have helped etch out the start of a great publication.

Inspirations:
Richard McManus, of Read/Write Web one of my favorite reads over the last few months or so.

John Seybold, my original inspiration on all things tech related in the publishing industry.

Anna Svidersky, who shared my belief in the fight on cancer.

Believers:
Matt Craven, former editor and publisher of The Blog Herald.

Chris Pearson, friend, designer, and chief web advisor.

There’s lots of others. Some I’m keeping off the list just cuz you are super humble and low profile. But thanks so much. You guys mean the world to me, and to 901am.

Readers:
You, feel free to drop your link in the comments guys. (Seriously)

Writers:
Muhammad Saleem, without him none of this would be possible.

Thord Hedengren, easily one of the smartest most energetic publishers and bloggers on the planet.

Thanks guys.

Sponsors:
Lastly I want to thank our sponsors. Without them we wouldnt be able to make headway in running a profitable web business.

Text Link Ads, the sure fire best way to monetize your web site.

Microsoft to tackle microtransactions online

microsoft Microsoft to tackle microtransactions onlineSo I’m hearing that Microsoft will develop an online payment system to help publishers charge small fees for internet content. The idea is that you’ll be able to charge your readers a really small amount, like a few cents of whatever, just with a simple click, and not having to give a big chunk of the dough to credit card companies.

The concept is good. I’m guessing lots of publishers would be happy to shake off the shackle of online advertising. The actual ads on a site would be worth more, since they could be fewer and more premium, you know.

YouTube Foolishly Heads Towards Prerolls

Youtube is foolishly heading towards using pre roll advertising. I have my opinion on prerolls but I can’t wait to see the users revolt over this. I sure as heck hope its user optional otherwise users will surely head somewhere else.

According to the BBC:

YouTube founder Chad Hurley confirmed to the BBC that his team was working on a revenue-sharing mechanism that would “reward creativity”.

The system would be rolled out in a couple of months, he said, and use a mixture of adverts, including short clips shown ahead of the actual film.

Call it Gevil – education the world about how evil Google really is

gevil Call it Gevil education the world about how evil Google really isI’m not sure if I should laugh or be concerned.

Welcome to Gevil.org, the website dedicated to educating the public about the Evil nature of Google and the inherent flaws prevalent throughout their business model. From their colorful logo, to their “Do no evil” motto, Google has convinced the world that they are simply on a mission to improve the internet, the user experience, and life in general. Well my friends, the time has come for you to see what the search engine monopoly is really all about… greed.

Check out recently launched Gevil.org for some skeptic Google watching. Time will tell if it’s all just a crusade against a company that actually works, or serious digging in the works of Google. It is, however, great stuff for a Saturday morning post.

Personal extra cred from me to people who can relate to “Call it Gevil” in the right way…

TechCrunch or Digg?

Most marketers think that getting on the front-page of Digg will solve all their problems. The question is, “if you could choose between the home page of Digg, TechCrunch, Netscape, or Reddit, which would you prefer?” And the answer, it appears, is not what you would expect.

To provide some insight, we have brought in guest blogger, Mark Roberge, CEO of PawSpot.com. Over the past six months, PawSpot has made an appearance on the home page of each of these entities.

So which home-page should you aspire to be on from a purely marketing perspective?

To be honest, when TechCrunch covered us, we were still in user experience testing and had not even officially launched the site. However, the mention alone led to coverage by at least 50 additional blogs and invitations to a number of speaking engagements within the next few weeks. Add TechCrunch to your PR firm’s target list and buy Arrington a drink when you see him out on the town.

The Future of YouTube and Google Video

When Google acquired YouTube no one knew what to expect. Today the answers are a little clearer. Google Video will remain but will become more of a search engine for all video online. While YouTube will remain the destination for Online Video, and sales center for video online, a virtual competitor to iTunes.

YouTube is the hub of video online, user generated content and commercial content. Google wants to see it grow into the hub of online video sales. And while its very possible that’s the case it will be interesting to watch this unfold.

Coding Robots Unveil Blogjet 2.0

blogjet top Coding Robots Unveil Blogjet 2.0One of my favorite desktop blogging applications for PC’s has been Blogjet. If you’ve never heard of Blogjet don’t worry many haven’t because they are missing out on some great opportunities. One of things that’s really awesome about this new version is that its the first to integrate with MovableType’s new tagging system.

Blogjet is used by many and easily integrates picture editing directly into the application. For a free alternative to Blogjet that runs on your desktop check out one of my favorite products, Blogdesk.
