Wordpress.com Snaps to it
I’m no fan of the Snap craze going on. It’s a service that, whenever you hover over a link, displays a thumbnail version of the link’s target. I can see its advantages, but they’re not something you just should add. Like the WP.com crew is doing to hosted blogs right now.
After the overwhelming response to our last entry about Snap, we’ve decided to make it available for everyone.
Luckily, you can turn it off, and I hope most of the WP.com bloggers do (Dashboard people). There’s enough junk on blogs already, adding another widget just for fun doesn’t appeal to me at all.

I never understood the whole snap thing. What information value do they give to the visitors?
Same with del.icio.us. What’s the purpose of the little thumbnails next to the most popular links? More clutter?

Yup, It appears to be clutter to me. Although I guess some folks really dig em.

95% of the time I would agree, although, for a small handful the thumbnails are brilliant. For visually rich blogs linking to other sites with content that is carried by their design, it’s a great feature. Of course this is coming from an artist/blogger.

Maybe so Ashley, but on the whole it’s bloody annoying, particularly at TechCrunch.

Oh, Snap.
Thanks for the warning, I just turned it off. Web 2.0, thou art a puny hell-hated boar-pig!

[...] Jan 16, 2007 in Blogging When I went through my usual feeds today, I saw that David Krug posted something about Wordpress’ latest “snappy” idea. This just reinforced my overall skepticism of anything Web two-dot-ohey. Even more so since they’ve decided, “after the overwhelming response to [their] last entry about Snap”, to enforce it upon every blogger using their system as a default for all links. Completely overwhelmed myself, I was able to disable it, though. [...]
