Social networking fever catching up in Australia and New Zealand

old friends Social networking fever catching up in Australia and New ZealandThough Americans show waning interest on social networking sites recently, they are booming in Australia and New Zealand.

According to the first ever study on the Australia New Zealand Region conducted by Nielsen Online, about 1.3 million or 62% of adult New Zealanders and 55% of Australians using the net are now engaged in this habit-forming networking activity.

About one-third of Aussies and a quarter of Kiwis have created their social networking profile in the last 3 months. In the last 12 months, about half of Kiwis and 44% of Aussies had made some updates on their online profiles.

The more dramatic change is the shift on users’ perspectives. Before, 17% of Kiwis used these sites for dating and flirting. Now, 42% say it is a platform to reconnect with old school friends and former colleagues. On the other hand, Aussies are merely driven by curiosity (34%).

Just like those sharks that smelled some blood, online advertisers will soon be flocking these territories in the hope of recouping profits loss in the U.S.
