BBC to share video content with UK newspapers
Four of the UK’s major newspapers — the Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and Daily Mail — will be able to embed some BBC video news content on their web sites, thanks to a new deal struck today.
Content won’t be exclusive, but instead editors will be able to choose videos from a number of subject areas — UK politics, business, health, and science and technology — which have already been published on the BBC Online web site.
The BBC may also roll out this service to other UK-based online news services in the future, with the initial publications chosen because they have a significant audience.
The broadcaster has laid down some ground rules for the use of the content.
Firstly, content may not be directly connected with any advertising, such as pre- or post-roll ads. Presumably, incidental surrounding advertising will be allowed.
As expected, geo-blocking will help to ensure that only UK residents can view BBC video content even when it’s embedded on a third party site.
Additionally, the BBC has no plans to offer bespoke content for other publishers. All video content will be clearly branded and linked back to the BBC web site.
