Google has made a tradition of naming its various Android OS iterations after various desserts or sweet treats – you had Cupcake,Éclair, Froyo (which stands for frozen yogurt), Gingerbread, and the latest version to market Honeycomb. There is already talk of the development of the successor to Honeycomb, called Ice Cream Sandwich, which Android fans are waiting for. Talk is that it will be released sometime during the last quarter of this year. But even with Ice Cream Sandwich still on the horizon, there is now a rumor that a version that will succeed Ice Cream Sandwich is already being developed.

The rumor is that the new version to follow Ice Cream Sandwich is going to be called Jelly Bean. But more important than the name, supposedly some of the improvements and new features that are supposed to be included with Ice Cream Sandwich will be pushed back and will appear on Jelly Bean instead. But then, at present, little is known about Ice Cream Sandwich apart from what few things were revealed during the Google I/O Conference where it was first discussed. The only thing known about Ice Cream Sandwich is that it will seek to bridge functionality between smartphones and tablets, a statement that is more likely meant to quell talks of fragmenting the OS into separate smartphones and tablet environments.

The next few weeks will likely reveal more information about Ice Cream Sandwich and hopefully shed a little more light on the rumored Jelly Bean.
