As of now the Google badges are not available for public and so only selected partners have the access to this new keyword search. Once the Google launch the badges for public, it would be much easier to enroll in direct connect and will also act as a strong enticement for Google to constrain the adoption of badges.

If you want to get a Google + badge, all you need to do is to sign up for Google platform preview and you can avail all the latest updates of Google+ platform as they get released. Even the business entities can get registered with Google + and get the badges. It will make the business qualified for Google + direct which may bring it in searches more often. For example if Pepsi is registered with Google + and if you search by Pepsi, you will be directed to the Google plus page of Pepsi company.

The new badges of Google + are not the same as the Google news badges. The Google news badges are rewarded to the users who read the Google news stories.
