Penguin Opts Out of Kindle Library Lending Service

penguin 225x300 Penguin Opts Out of Kindle Library Lending ServiceIn what is considered a move that could be followed by other top book publishers, the Penguin Group  has announced that it has asked Amazon to remove all of its e-books from the Amazon Kindle library lending service. The publisher said that security fears are the main reason it is stopping the lending of its books.

According to OverDrive, the company that works with Amazon in managing digital content to different institutions like libraries, schools and retailers, the Penguin Group said that it has asked to “suspend availability of new Penguin e-book titles from our library catalog and disable ‘Get for Kindle’  functionality for all Penguin e-books.”

The Penguin Group, on the other hand, issued a statement citing security issues as the reason for its decision. “We have always placed a high value on the role that libraries can play in connecting our authors with our readers,” said Penguin (via AP). “However, due to new concerns about the security of our digital editions, we find it necessary to delay the availability of our new titles in the digital format while we resolve these concerns with our business partners.”

Even though Penguin did not cite the exact security concerns that led to its decision, the general theory is that the company does not like the policy of people being able to borrow books from participating libraries without having to physically go there. The common belief of the book publishers when it signed on to participate in the lending service is that people will be able to access books that they can borrow if they actually go to the library, which would put a physical requirement for borrowing the books. But the service turned out to be different. A person can actually just borrow the books from the comfort of his home and continue doing so with other libraries.

We will find out in the coming weeks of Penguin’s move will serve to open the floodgates for other publishers to get out of the Amazon lending service.
