LG to release flexible e-paper displays this month

Korean tech manufacturer LG has announced that it will start full scale production of its thin e-paper displays. The company has also announced that flexible products that will sport this new display will begin appearing in the market as early as this month.

The new technology surrounding the flexible e-paper display may open new doors to a whole new category of products. The e-paper display is very durable, which makes it the perfect display choice for products that are prone to be dropped – this could be anything from e-book readers, tablets and mobile phones (or in the case of someone I know, practically any product). Based on tests, a 1.5 meter drop didn’t even damage this flexible display. LG also demonstrated the display’s durability by hammering the display with a plastic hammer. It was not only undamaged, it was even resistant to abrasion, cracks or scratches.

The first display LG has shown has a size of 6 inches on the diagonal, and has a thickness of 0.7mm. It has a weight of just 14 grams and boasts a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which is XGA territory. As far as flexibility goes, the display can be bended up to an angle of 40 degrees without damaging it.

Expect a wide array of products using this new flexible display to invade the market soon. With Samsung also developing their own flexible AMOLED displays – flexible screens look like it’s going to be the hot new tech this year.
