Houston Dynamo first MLS team to launch social network for fans

The Houston Dynamo became the first Major League Soccer team to launch an official fan social network with the debut of MyDynamo.net, a site where fans can interact with players, staff, and each other and share stories, pictures, videos, and more.

Dynamo season ticket holders and Dynamo Academy players were among a select group of members invited to join the site earlier this week, prior to the public launch.

The site will partner with the Dynamo’s main website, HoustonDynamo.com, to provide the most comprehensive online experience in the league.The new site, which was created using the Ning platform, will host the Dynamo’s Forever Orange blog and various player, fan, and staff blogs that will be publicly available. Many Dynamo players have online profiles that can be seen by other site members. Fans can create profiles, set up blogs, add photo galleries and videos, and track the number of games they’ve attended, among other features.

Dummies.com relaunches

For Dummies announced the relaunch of Dummies.com, an ad-supported website that brings the world’s most highly regarded reference series online – now with a robust offering of free how-to videos, knowledgeable bloggers, photo step-by-steps, and expanded instructional articles. Jaman rolls out UK operations

Online destination for high-definition and entertainment Jaman.com is meeting the demands of its international audience by increasing its library of content and expanding into the lucrative European marketplace. With international members accounting for more than 70% of the site’s users, Jaman marks its initial global expansion by introducing its first localized site in the United Kingdom.

Industry veteran David Fischer, former executive vice president and managing director of MySpace and Fox Interactive Media, will serve as managing director of Jaman’s UK and international operations. Based in London, Fischer will be responsible for international business operations.

The UK site debuts with more than 1000 titles, including those from leading film companies such as BFI (British Film Institute), Pathé Films, ContentFilms and Axiom Films.

The company recently announced a partnership with TiVo to make Jaman’s world-class films available in any living room in America – offering a whole new level of entertainment options for film lovers around the country. Jaman’s current content providers include Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, Eros International, Magnolia Pictures, First Look Films, Arts Alliance America and BBC Worldwide.

The Knot acquires Breastfeeding.com

The Knot Inc. has acquired Breastfeeding.com, a website dedicated to providing advice on breastfeeding. The addition of Breastfeeding.com further enhances The Knot Inc.’s robust pregnancy and first-time parenting offerings, which include TheBump.com and LilaGuide.com.

With thousands of breastfeeding Q+As, articles and videos, Breastfeeding.com has the deepest easy-to-understand, easy-to-find collection of breastfeeding content on the web.

Breastfeeding.com also has a directory of nearly 4,000 lactation consultants, Plus, first-time moms struggling with breastfeeding can log onto the website to join in 2-hour live chats with lactation consultants four times a week.

“We are thrilled to add Breastfeeding.com to our suite of number-one websites for women in key lifestages,” said David Liu, CEO of The Knot Inc.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

KickApps launches next generation drag-and-drop video and widget authoring solution

KickApps has released KickApps App Studio, its next generation of its drag-and-drop Widget and Video Player authoring solution. Users of the web-based KickApps App Studio can create highly customized embeddable Flash applications with drag-and-drop ease, including the ability to integrate best-of-breed third party applications, content and web services. Yodle secures $10 million funding

Yodle, Inc. has completed a $10 million Series C funding led by JAFCO Ventures. They were joined by Draper Fisher Jurvetson Growth and existing investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Bessemer Venture Partners. The funds will be used to double investment in product and technology innovation as well as to continue a national sales expansion.

Demand for local online advertising fueled tremendous growth at Yodle in 2008, despite the economic downturn. The New York-based company reported 700% year-over-year revenue growth from 2007 and ending 2008. Yodle now boasts approximately 5,000 customers – up from 125 in 2006.

MySpace to send one member to Davos as “Special Correspondent” for World Economic Forum

Sony unveils Wi-Fi digital camera with web browser

sonywifiWith focus on making photo sharing easier and more convenient, Sony has introduced the world’s first Wi-Fi enabled digital camera that uploads photos and videos to web sites through any public hotspot due to its built-in web browser.

The new Cyber-shot DSC-G3 digital still camera answers one of the most pressing needs for photo enthusiasts: how to share those amazing photos and video clips of family, friends and events as soon as you shoot. The Cyber-shot camera makes it easy to upload images and video directly to popular photo and video sharing sites wherever a Wi-Fi connection is available.

The camera can wirelessly connect to any public hotspot, including hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and airports. Like a computer, the camera can connect to free or fee-based hotspots, as well as to secure and unsecured access points.

Eye-Fi to launch wireless video uploads direct to YouTube

Eye-Fi Inc., makers of the world’s first wireless memory card for digital cameras, is developing a way for users to wirelessly upload videos from their digital camera to YouTube and a home computer.

Eye-Fi is designing its video upload service to support full-resolution HD video, with newer cameras like the Nikon D90 capturing HD video and web sites including YouTube now testing display of HD video.

With Eye-Fi’s wireless SD memory cards for digital cameras, users can upload photos – and soon video – automatically through Wi-Fi networks. Eye-Fi hotspot subscribers can also upload their memories away from home at more than 10,000 Wayport and open hotspot locations across the U.S.
