Safari 3 should love Google Apps, does it really?

Safari 3One of the big things with Safari 3, now available on Windows as well as we’ve reported previously, is that it should work better with Google Apps. Apple and Google are lovers nowadays and the former makes money from the search box delivered by the latter.

Yes, that is the way to make money on free browsers. Did you think they did it for the fun of it?

I’ve been running Safari 3 for over a week now and I’m satisfied. It’s a lot faster than Firefox on Mac, but it does have its issues. Like the Wordpress editor, as reported, and Gmail. Yes, Gmail – while the visual editor now works as intended it often hangs when sending, forcing you to stop the transfer and resend. Then it usually works. Most other Google Apps seems to work though, but there may be more issues.

Does Safari 3 work for you? Also, does anyone besides Mac folk actually run it?

Get that dollar under control, please

So I’m looking at my Paypal account and realize I won’t be moving any money anytime soon. The dollar’s down, has been for quite some time, and that means us non-US people make less for the same work. Blogging is usually paid per post and when a fluctuating currency is used you can find yourself doing the same work for less money, without you adjusting your prices. Meanwhile, nothing much have changed for your American employer which means they won’t like it if you up your rates.

I lost equivalent of a grand (perhaps more when you read this, or less, depending on how the dollar moves compared to the Swedish crown) recently, just due to the dollar being down. That sucks.

The blogosphere is paying in dollars, but being a non-American blogger suddenly pays less. Will that change?

Scott Karp: Journos should start blogging

Journo at workScott Karp over at Publishing 2.0 have a post up, basically saying that every journalist should start a blog. And of course, there’s rebuttals to this stance, which also shows in the post and comments.

I’m not sure I entirely agree with Scott. While journalists have lots to gain from blogging, there’s also the fact that a lot of them suck without an editor bringing out the best.

There, I said it. Self-publising isn’t necessary a good thing, editors save us from crappy grammar and hollow stories in the print world. Editors also tend to miss out on lots of that, proving that it’s not a universal law that print is better than web. But at least it’s another set of eyes on the writer’s piece of work, and that ups the chance of getting rid of errors. I know a lot of journalists, and have edited some, that definitely can’t be left with a Publish button.

Not all journalists should blog, it might end up biting them in the neck. In other words, just the good ones should get into blogging – the rest would do us all a favor by shutting up.

Wordpress.com passes 1m blogs, adds domain e-mail

1 million blogsCongratulations to the good folks over at Wordpress.com on them reaching over 1 million blogs! I tried to keep an eye on it but this was as close as I could get…

Expect a formal announcement from Matt & Co. later on.

In other Wordpress.com news, they have added domain mapping for e-mail using Google Apps. That means that if you connect your e-mail to your Wordpress.com blog they can give you access via Google Apps, as in Gmail for your domain. Nice.

CBS have indeed bought Wallstrip

We reported on this previously, and now it’s official: CBS have bought online stock show Wallstrip. The host Lindsay Campbell will stay on, as will the producers Adam Elend and Jeff Marks, working under the CBSNews.com banner. NewTeeVee’s got more, and founder Howard Lindzon have a post up as well. No amount have been announced, although the $5m previously mentioned have been reported wrong.

Be sure to watch the announcement video, showing of the Wallstrip style of course…

Google Reader for the Nintendo Wii

Via recently launched Read/WriteWeb sibling last10 I found the Wii version of the Google Reader, my RSS feedreader of choice. Naturally I couldn’t resist checking it out and it looks decent enough. You can watch it in your browser, on your Wii of course, or thanks to Youtube below.

Oh, and there’s a post on it on the Google Reader blog as well. Splendid.

On2 buys Finish mobile video company

On2Ever heard of On2? If you have worked with Flash you might have, as they have great conversion software for just about any video format to Flash files. I’ve used their cheaper products for a few products and own a few licenses actually. They’re good, I recommend them…

Anyway, they’re stating in a press release that they’ve bought Finish mobile video company Hantro, which I’ve never heard of. Hantro obviously works with video and various compression implementations for Nokia, Sanyo and a bunch of other companies. Mobile stuff, but not only mobile phones it would seem.

So why are On2 buying Hantro? Well, it’s pretty obvious, right? They’re after the Finish company’s technology so that On2 can further push into the handheld market with their software. That’s worth over $58 million, right? Well, it might, as Hantro seems to be thriving with expected 2007 revenues over $8 million according to the release.

Calacanis hunts displays and keyboards are getting expensive

I like to treat myself to an inspiring work area. That’s why my office has a nice red couch, gaming consoles although I don’t review much anymore, great speakers for my computers and stuff like that. I want to feel inspired to do things when I sit down in the morning with my coffee.

I also like to have great tools to save time as well as make it more fun to work. Let’s face it, it’s a lot more fun blogging on a MacBook than it is doing it on a crappy PC from 2001, with a flickering CRT monitor and a yellowish keyboard that should’ve hit the garbage bin years ago. More →

How to survive the e-mail flood

Web Worker Daily have a great post up on how to manage your e-mail. They’re focusing primarily on Gmail but most of the tips are quite possible in other mail apps, on or offline, as well. Check it out!

Personally, I have another take on it, although the basic concept is the same. Since double posting sucks I’ll just link you to my previous blog post on the subject.

How do you manage your e-mail?

TypePad gets Pages, Blogs go Beyond

TypePadAs a convinced Wordpress user it’s hard not to snicker when reading the announcement that TypePad gets static pages. Old news for WP users, but fine, it’s a good addition and if you use TypePad you can enjoy it right away.

If you’re a TypePad blogger, we know you’re serious about making a great blog. But what about the parts of your site that don’t fit into your blog? A detailed contact page listing all the ways someone can get in touch. What about a biography that explains just how you became such an expert on the topic you blog about? Or, maybe your business’s blog needs a good set of directions to your office, along with a map. A couple extra pages on your site would add a lot of power and flexibility to your blog.

Why are they adding pages, by the way? Most likely because the users want it, but it also shows that blogs are more than just blogs these days. Blogging software powers major websites, it’s not just journals and quick reports anymore. Which makes me wonder if the term “blog” isn’t a bit worn out in a lot of aspects…
