BOOMj, Inc., a web-based niche social network and e-commerce site serving more than 78 million baby boomers and adults over 35, today named the “Top 10 Green Baby Boomers,†in honor of Earth Day 2008. These individuals are leading the pack in environmentally friendly products and practices, and are encouraging the rest of the world to live “green†lives.
BOOMj’s Top 10 Green Baby Boomers include:
1. Al Gore – The former vice president is a leading advocate in confronting the global warming issue, and has spearheaded countless green initiatives aimed at motivating the country to lead environmentally friendly lives. He is the author of the best selling novel “An Inconvenient Truth,†and is the co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a firm focused on sustainable living.
2. Blythe Danner – Mother of Gwyneth Paltrow and grandmother of Apple and Moses, Blythe raised an environmentally conscious family and helped to present the new garbage trucks powered by natural gas.
3. Newt Gingrich – This politician refused to run in the 2008 presidential election as a conservative environmentalist; preferring to devote his time and energy into improving the environment.
4. Bono – You’ll seldom read a story about environmentally conscious celebs without Bono’s name being mentioned. A widely-known social activist, Bono spends much of his time promoting humanitarian and environmental issues. He has received three Nobel Peace Prize nominations to date.
5. Oprah Winfrey – This world humanitarian has spoken on topics including global warming, and is an unstoppable force when it comes to raising money and awareness for green issues. She puts her celebrity and show’s popularity to good use – making her one of the world’s ultimate entertainers/philanthropists.
6. Arnold Schwarzenegger – The Governor of California has quickly become one of the country’s most aggressively pro-environment figures. One of his largest ongoing battles is the fight against drilling for oil off the coast of California.
7. Daryl Hannah – Ms. Hannah lives in a solar powered house built with all ‘green’ materials, and devotes her life to saving our planet. The environmentally friendly way she leads her life is a perfect example of the fact that it really can be done!
8. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. – This master-paddler boomer is on a mission to keep our water clean. Serving as President of WaterKeeper Alliance and leading the charge to restore and clean up the Hudson River through the Riverkeeper organization, this Kennedy is paddling through political white-waters to help make our world a greener place.
9. George Clooney – George has done a great job balancing his appearances in blockbuster movies and hit TV shows with his work in political, social and environmental activism. He has a love of eco-friendly gadgets and cars, and was reportedly among the first to own an electric vehicle that gets 135 miles to the charge.
10. Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting – While the team may not win a championship game anytime soon, they may be baseball’s most environmentally friendly team. Nutting, who comes from the family that publishes Mother Earth News and Utne Reader, has led the team’s green practices which include using corn-based cups, toilet paper made with 100% recycling input, and programs printed with soy-based ink. The teams scouts even use fuel flex cars.
