Barnes & Noble to Release New Nook Tablet With Reduced Specs

When Barnes & Noble announced its Nook Tablet a few months back, it placed a lot of emphasis on its features and how it is superior to Amazon’s Kindle Fire Tablet. It did have a lot going for it. It had a more RAM (1GB to 512MB) and storage (16GB to 8GB), and these specs were used to justify its price, which is more expensive than the Kindle Fire (the Nook Tablet is $250 while the Kindle Fire is $199). Amazon Removes 5000 Books From Kindle Store Over Contract Dispute

Amazon recently removed about 5,000 ebooks from the Kindle store as a result of not being able to forge an agreement with Independent Publishers Group about over a new contract. The 41 year old IPG was founded in Chicago and officially went into the ebook business in 2001. The group is the second largest independent book distributor in the United States.

Amazon began to remove IPG titles from the Kindle Store at the beginning of the week when the two entities could not agree on terms on a new contract. The pullout is only for the ebooks, the printed editions of the same titles are still available at Amazon. [Read more…]

CyanogenMod To Open Its Own App Market

If you have an Android smartphone or tablet that you have rooted with CyanogenMod then you’ll be pleased to know that the guys behind the popular Android custom ROM are going to put up its own application store.

This was announced by Koushik Dutta, one of the people behind CyanogenMod. Dutta said the new store, which will be an independent enterprise, will bring in much needed revenue for CyanogenMod. The custom ROM is arguably the most popular Android modification around the world. It is estimated that more than a million Android phones run CyanogenMod. [Read more…]

Amazon Developing a Smartphone?

Amazon is intent on making itself a significant player not just in the online retail industry (which it is actually dominating) but also on the consumer electronics front. It has proven that it knows the pulse of the public with the successful launch and significant sales of its Kindle eBook readers. It has continued its foray into consumer electronics with the highly regarded Kindle Fire tablet, one of the most affordable tablet in the market right now. But if reports are to be believed, Amazon is going deeper into its strategy by releasing a mobile phone next year.

According to rumors that have come out of Citigroup’s research department, Amazon is likely already preparing for the production of an Amazon Smartphone. One of the sources of the rumor are the component suppliers from Asia. [Read more…]

Penguin Opts Out of Kindle Library Lending Service

In what is considered a move that could be followed by other top book publishers, the Penguin Group  has announced that it has asked Amazon to remove all of its e-books from the Amazon Kindle library lending service. The publisher said that security fears are the main reason it is stopping the lending of its books.

According to OverDrive, the company that works with Amazon in managing digital content to different institutions like libraries, schools and retailers, the Penguin Group said that it has asked to “suspend availability of new Penguin e-book titles from our library catalog and disable ‘Get for Kindle’  functionality for all Penguin e-books.” [Read more…]
