Microsoft and Nokia to develop “mobile productivity solutions”

March 27, 2023 By Andy Merrett Leave a Comment

microsoft-nokia-logosIn a press conference earlier today, Microsoft and Nokia announced a partnership which would see them design, develop and market mobile productivity solutions.

Side-stepping the corporate jargon as best we can, it means that Microsoft’s Office Mobile plus a range of its business comms, collaboration and device management software will be available on Nokia devices running the Symbian operating system.

Obviously, it’s been possible to work with Office documents and to interface with other Microsoft products on Nokia devices for years, but this is an official alliance that, in rhetoric at least, will offer a “seamless and integrated productivity experience”.

YouTube’s New Mobile Site Features Browser Playback

March 27, 2023 By Mike Abundo Leave a Comment

YouTube Mobile SiteYouTube just upgraded their mobile site, and I like what they’ve done with it. The previous mobile site opened videos in your phone’s player application. With this new mobile site, the videos play right there in your phone’s browser.

I did run into one little niggle while testing the site on my Nokia N95: thumbnails in listings still reverted to the old behavior of launching an external player. YouTube’s own mobile player application is still the best way to watch skateboarding dogs on the go, but this new mobile site is a viable alternative. Try it yourself: visit youtube.com on your mobile device.

March 27, 2023 By Andy Merrett 1 Comment

Mobile music streaming is set to become even more popular as data rates and all-you-can-eat packages increase and various web-based services find their way to the mobile Internet, so it’s no surprise that UK mobile operator Orange has teamed up with music giant Universal and Channel 4 TV to launch Monkey, a free music service for cellphone users who don’t have a monthly contract.

orange-logoAiming to be a central source of music as well as a social network for sharing playlists and portal offering music news, gossip, exclusive content and competitions, the service is targeting the 16-24 age group.

Orange claims that the service will work on any handset connected to the network. The service is supposed to be simple to operate — users are presented with a choice of eight preset playlists (such as R&B, rock, pop, chart), and it’s also possible to set up eight personalized playlists which can then be shared. MyBlackBerry social network launches

RIM has decided that it’s time to launch a social network for BlackBerry users and dreamers: MyBlackBerry.

Perhaps it’s because the company, while far from abandoning corporate users, is increasingly looking to impress consumers that the move has happened. The company has a large user base but certainly needs to do something fresh to stave off competition from the likes of Apple’s iPhone and other smartphone manufacturers.

Facebook this social network isn’t, but rather it’s designed more as a bulletin board for users to talk (rant) about the various flavors of BlackBerry, set up a personal profile (tailored dependent on which handset you own), and rate and review applications. [Read more…]
