For weeks, I’ve been hearing Apple fanboys pan Verizon’s Motorola Droid ads as too geeky and unappealing for the mass market. I’ve been hearing fanboys claim that nongeeks can’t understand “open development”, that they’d be scared off by images of stealth bombers. Google bringing free advanced sat-nav to Android-powered cellphones

Google wants to be your satellite navigation partner, as it announces the power of Google Maps together with some nifty features are coming soon to Android 2.0-powered cellphones.

It believes the feature set it has built in to the turn-by-turn system beat other sat-navs hands down.

These include voice recognition, the ability to enter a whole range of voice or text destinations — including street names, places of interest, and even queries such as “the museum that houses this particular exhibition” — and satellite and street and traffic view while navigating. [Read more…]

Microsoft attempting Android/iPhone catchup with dual Windows Mobile development?

If sources at Taiwanese mobile handset manufacturers can be believed, Microsoft plans to keep both Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7 alive well into the next decade, in a bid to compete with Android-based cellphones and the iPhone.

windows-mobile-logoMicrosoft could attack Android phones with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5, expected on October 1 this year with an upgraded touch interface available from February 2010.

A Windows Mobile 7 launch planned for the fourth quarter of 2010 and would potentially compete with the iPhone.

If true, that’s a seriously long lead time and makes me wonder just how serious Microsoft is about keeping and gaining mobile OS market share. [Read more…]
