Apple and Orange finally break O2 UK iPhone monopoly

Some countries that had the “privilege” of getting the iPhone early on, such as the US and UK, have been shackled to one telecoms company since the outset.

While AT&T may still have Apple fans tied up, there is at least some hope for UK users who either object on principle to exclusive deals (common though they are), or don’t like the O2 network because of its reliability or customer screwing tactics. [Read more…]

Official: T-Mobile and Orange plan to merge, forming UK’s largest mobile operator

t-mobile-orange-logosThe speculation is over as two of the UK’s mobile phone network operators have announced their intention to merge.

If the application from T-Mobile and Orange is approved, it would make the combined company the largest operator in the UK, with a 37% market share, propelling it past O2.

The deal is due to be completed by November, with the two companies unsurprisingly speaking of the “substantial benefits to UK customers” the merger would bring.

The proposal has to get past competition regulators first. [Read more…]

Monkey: New contract-free UK mobile music service launches

Mobile music streaming is set to become even more popular as data rates and all-you-can-eat packages increase and various web-based services find their way to the mobile Internet, so it’s no surprise that UK mobile operator Orange has teamed up with music giant Universal and Channel 4 TV to launch Monkey, a free music service for cellphone users who don’t have a monthly contract.

orange-logoAiming to be a central source of music as well as a social network for sharing playlists and portal offering music news, gossip, exclusive content and competitions, the service is targeting the 16-24 age group.

Orange claims that the service will work on any handset connected to the network. The service is supposed to be simple to operate — users are presented with a choice of eight preset playlists (such as R&B, rock, pop, chart), and it’s also possible to set up eight personalized playlists which can then be shared.
