Microsoft Officially Announces Three Windows 8 Versions

Microsoft has officially announced the name of its next operating system. The new product will actually be called by the very name it has been referred to by everyone – Windows 8. Aside from this announcement, the company has also revealed that it will be releasing three variants of Windows 8.

The first product, to be called “Windows 8” is geared towards the general consumer. “Windows 8 Pro”, on the other hand, is aimed at the business market. The third version is going to be one that is compatible with ARM processors and will be officially called “Windows RT”. This last version of Windows 8 will come pre-installed in Windows on ARM devices, or WOA. [Read more…]

Samsung Decides to Merge Bada with Tizen

Most smartphone users are probably very familiar with mobile operating systems like iOS, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. But what many people don’t know is that Samsung also developed its own mobile operating system – the Bada. Samsung’s proprietary OS was launched with much fanfare in 2009. Android Market reaches historic 10 billion download level

The Android Market recently reached a historic milestone as it recorded about 10 billion apps downloaded since it was opened. Google announced that to commemorate this record number of downloads it has partnered with a number of Android app developers to offer a number of apps at very reasonable prices, an understatement given that these apps will be made available for only 10 cents. HP’s WebOS Now Open Source

Hewlett Packard’s exit from the tablet market was quite a jolt even though a lot of people already predicted that it was inevitable. One of the fallouts of HP’s move was that the operating system that they bought from Palm for $1.2 billion, WebOS, was suddenly placed in limbo. HP finally addressed the issue when it announced that it has decided to release WebOS as an open source software.

HP’s decision to turn WebOS to the public was a bit of a shock. Most people were speculating that the company will just sell it to recoup some of its investment. Others thought that HP will just totally mothball the OS. HP’s decision leaves many to conclude that it still believes in WebOS and that it will benefit from open source development. [Read more…]

Ubuntu To Go Mobile: What’s In Store For Us

Linux is the poster child of open source computing. It is valiantly standing its ground against Microsoft and has been able to carve a niche for itself in the operating system market. But in order to thrive, Linux needs to go and expand its market. It is doing that by going mobile. It was recently announced that Ubuntu, one of the most popular Linux distributions, is venturing into other devices like tablets, phones, TV and other smart screens that will be installed in offices, kitchens, and other spaces. The announcement also indicated that all these mobile Ubuntu powered devices can connect “cleanly and seamlessly to the desktop, the server and the cloud.”

This announcement from Ubuntu is a tall order. The picture being painted is one that majority of gadget users are actually asking for. But will it be able to deliver? [Read more…]
