4 Instant Souvenir Makers for your iPhone

January 9, 2023 By Angus Shaw

These 4 fun apps for your iPhone will bring out the photographer in you. They each have something special to offer so get all of them. You’ve got plenty of memory to spare and in a pinch you can always stash them in the Clouds with that spiffy new iCloud thing. Sometimes the best innovation is to rediscover the past. A favorite old book of mine, called the Power of Will has a helpful rule to follow-‘Overlook nothing because it is old and approve nothing because it is new.’

8mm Vintage Camera

8mm Vintage Camera offers a stunning glimpse into our photographic heritage. The worst thing about living in the twenty-first century, besides all of that other stuff in the newspapers, is that all of the media is so perfect. Real time this; digitally edit that, who needs it? As Shirley MacClaine exclaimed in one of her popular dance numbers, “phooey!’

Perfection is so boring, what’s left to aspire to? That’s why we’re so lucky that 8mm Vintage Camera is here to the rescue. Take that disgustingly perfect video that you shot and drag it through the dust to scratch it up. Go back in time to your favorite retro era.

Differing film types, lenses, looks, audio effects, herky jerkies and more add to the time dilation. [Read more…]

iPhone trade-ins rising in anticipation of iPhone 5 release

January 9, 2023 By 901am

You know anticipation for the iPhone 5 is reaching a fever pitch when people are beginning to dump their old iPhones.

This is the trend Gazelle, a trade-in service, has been noticing over the last few days. It has noticed a dramatic increase in the number of iPhone users trading in their phones. The main reason is universal – they are anticipating the announcement for the iPhone 5 during the first week of October.

This kind of behavior is really indicative of the level of anticipation Apple and iPhone lovers are experiencing over the rumored iPhone 5. Gazelle reported that it has experienced an 84 percent rise in trade-ins for various models of the iPhone, compared to the trade-in levels for the product about two weeks ago. The rise in trade-ins is made the more significant by the fact that there is still no solid indications on whether Apple will release information about the iPhone 5 for October, which is generally believed as the month Apple will unveil new products in its lineup. iPhone Inherits iWork

January 9, 2023 By darnell

After many months of waiting, it looks like iPhone fans will finally be able to use iWork upon their mobile device (albeit for a price).

Now you can use Keynote, Pages and Numbers on iPhone and iPod touch to create amazing presentations, documents and spreadsheets right in the palm of your hand,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The incredible Retina display, revolutionary Multi-Touch interface and our powerful software make it easy to create, edit, organize and share all of your documents from iPhone 4 or iPod touch.” (Apple)

Why Apple failed to do this sooner is a mystery, especially in light of Google releasing an official Docs app for Android.

Despite the belated entry, Keynote, Pages and Numbers are available upon the App Store for $10 a piece (which is pricey as most third party office suites supporting Excel, Powerpoint and Word range between $10-$20).

Although I’m personally not an iWork fan (due to Excel having no equal), for those of you who enjoy iWork, what are your thoughts regarding the app?

Also does the small screen ideal for the app or should have Apple simply stuck with keeping iWork and iPad app?

iPhone Wish List: 5 Things Needed In iOS 5

January 9, 2023 By darnell

With Apple delaying iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S depending on who you talk to) and turning WWDC into a software only affair, many tech pundits have been pondering what Steve Jobs will unveil to to the world.

While there is debate on whether iPhone 5 will be another “giant leap” or merely a spec refresher, there are a few features Apple needs to implement upon iOS 5 in order to challenge Android for smartphone dominance. [Read more…]

Verizon: iPhone 5 To Be A World Phone

January 9, 2023 By darnell

Although I’m personally skeptical about this rumor, a world iPhone (i.e. one that embraces CDMA and GSM) would make sense. It may also explain why Apple is releasing the upcoming iPhone in September instead of June or July.

Verizon Wireless will soon release a Verizon iPhone that works overseas, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said in a conference call with analysts this week, according to the Associated Press. The current Verizon iPhone works only in North America, while the AT&T iPhone can run on overseas GSM networks. A rejiggered Verizon iPhone would put the handset on level with the rival AT&T edition. (Christian Science Monitor)

The current Verizon iPhone is CDMA only, which means that its limited to the US, parts of China and a few locations in South America (if you’re fortunate enough to stumble upon them).

While the call quality is superior (at least in the US), the phone is utterly useless for those who travel the globe for business and pleasure.

Selling a world phone would put Verizon on par with AT&T (who embraces GSM), giving one less reason for American consumers to embrace Ma Bell over “Big Red.”
