Lost Phones in the US in 2011 Pegged at $30B

Losing a phone is something a lot of people have experienced. We’ve either gone through this experience or heard of others going losing their phones. Losing a phone is a very inconvenient thing to go through – most people don’t back up their phone details so the loss of data can be quite catastrophic.

According to new industry report by mobile security company Lookout, the average US mobile phone user loses a phone every year. The report was based on an analysis done on 15 million mobile phone users. About $30 billion worth of mobile phones were lost last year. [Read more…]

Symantec Reveals Results of Honey Stick Project

Symantec recently released details of the study it recently conducted called the Honey Stick Project. The project deals with smartphone loss. The company deliberately “lost” 50 smartphones, which contain a number of simulated personal and corporate data. These phones also contain the capability to remotely monitor what happens to these phones and also contain “data” about the owner of the smartphone that can be contacted by the person who found the phone if they want to return it. Google Tightens Security Around Android Market

Google recently announced that it has strengthened the security tools around the company’s Android mobile operating system. The announcement was made through a post published on the Google Mobile blog. The announcement came from Hiroshi Lockheimer, the Vice President of Engineering for Android.

One of the things that Lockheimer shared is a new service called Bouncer. This new security tool scans the Android Market and specifically looks for malicious software. Bouncer was designed to run in the background to detect malware. Bouncer will not interfere with the operations of Android Market. GSM Phones Vulnerable to Mobile Attacks?

According to Karsten Nohl, a prominent mobile security expert, All GSM mobile phones are susceptible to security issues that can let other people eavesdrop on their phone calls, send text messages and place calls from the phones of other people. This is a security flaw that can potentially become a big headache for mobile phone users as it could mean them being charged with extremely high fees and charges.
