MySpace agrees to release data on sex offenders

myspace3.jpgWith legal demands staring in its face, MySpace said that it will release data on registsred sex offenders that it has identified and removed from its website.

Citing federal privacy laws, MySpace at first denied a demand from North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper and other states, who asked for data on how many registered sex offenders are using MySpace and where they live.

MySpace agreed to provide the information to all states after some members of the group filed subpoenas and took other legal actions to demand it. MySpace obtained the data from Sentinel Tech Holding Corp., which the company partnered with in December to build a database with information on sex offenders in the United States.

Previously announced partnerships for hospitals to provide educational content to RealHealth.TV include Duke University Medical Center, UCLA Healthcare, Vanderbilt Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, University of Chicago Medical Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and Ohio State University Medical Center.

Digg’s Rose interested in dating

Wired’s Epicenter blog posts that Digg’s Kevin Rose is an investor in Iminlikewithyou.com, a dating site.

“Iminlikewithyou.com is the most innovative dating/social hookup sites I’ve seen in years. Think eBay for dating. But you’ll have to find an invite – as the site is currently private. Full disclosure: I thought it was cool, so I invested in the company,” Rose said.

New opinion poll benchmarks the state of online dating

okcupid.jpgVizu Corporation, the company democratizing market research, and OkCupid, a fast growing free online dating company, co-released a benchmark survey of current online dating attitudes and behaviors. Results showed that roughly half of all Internet users have partaken of an online dating web site in one form or another.

Of the 49 percent of survey respondents who claimed to have interacted with an online dating Web site, more than 20 percent were committed users, either by paying for a subscription or using a free service. Another 29 percent admit to at least browsing profiles, even if they don’t take that final step of signing up and making a connection. Those who do commit tend to stick around – 62 percent trying their luck for two months or longer.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents prefer services that provide personality questionnaires, analyze compatibility and offer matchmaking recommendations. And users want that service for free, too. Free sites are preferred over subscription services at a ratio of five-to-one. [Read more…]
